Cercanías Trains
Cercanías (greater Madrid light railway) is a commuter train service that travels to the outskirts of Madrid and beyond. Cercanías stations are underground near the city center but above ground further out. They can be recognised by the rotated white on red 'C' as shown here in the icon.

These trains are comfortable and punctual. They are not too crowded except at rush hours, are heated in winter and air-conditoned in summer.

Price varies by distance, (as well as being slightly more expensive on weekends and holidays) starting at 0.95 euro. Renfe, the Spanish national railway company, has provided a detailed map of the Cercanías routes.

This is probably the cheapest and fastest way for daytrips to the nearby cities and sites, in particular to Toledo, Segovia, Avila, El Escorial, Aranjuez, Chinchon, Alcala de Henares , the mountains and to the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid.
